Active projects

wafer.space · 2025 - Present

Founder & CEO

Community silicon pooling service — GF180MCU multi-project wafer runs that get custom chips manufactured from a few dollars per die, rebuilding low-cost fab access after the collapse of Efabless.

fpgas.online · Present

Co-conspirator (with Carl Karsten)

A remote FPGA lab anyone can use from a browser — a rack of real Arty dev boards with live camera views of the LEDs, free for experimenting with real hardware right now.

Past projects

Things built, shipped and handed on — no longer actively working on these.

TimVideos.us / HDMI2USB · 2011 - 2020

Founder

Open hardware and software for recording and live-streaming conferences — the HDMI2USB firmware and the Numato Opsis open video capture board, used in production at linux.conf.au, PyCon AU, DebConf, PyCon ZA and more; a Google Summer of Code mentoring organization across six programs (2013-2019).

F4PGA (formerly SymbiFlow) · 2015 - 2022

Founder

The "GCC of FPGAs" — fully open source FPGA toolchains built on reverse-engineered bitstream documentation for Xilinx 7-series, Lattice iCE40 and ECP5 parts.

LiteX ecosystem · 2015 - 2023

Contributor & ecosystem builder

Python-based SoC builder used across the open FPGA world; drove its adoption in HDMI2USB, Fomu and Google's open-silicon work, and helped build the litex-hub community around it.

Tomu / Fomu / Somu / Qomu · 2015 - 2021

Creator of Tomu; produced the family with Sean 'xobs' Cross

A family of tiny open hardware boards that fit entirely inside a USB port — Tomu (ARM), Fomu (an FPGA that runs Python), Somu (FIDO2) and Qomu — all crowdfunded through to production.

FuPy — MicroPython on FPGAs · 2017 - 2019

Co-founder

MicroPython running on soft-CPU SoCs (LiteX/Migen) so Python programmers could drive FPGA hardware directly.

PyCon AU · 2010 - 2018

Founder & lead organizer

Created Australia's national Python conference and organized it as it grew past 500 attendees.

linux.conf.au miniconfs (Embedded, Gaming, FPGA) · 2005 - 2018

Founder & organizer

Founded the Embedded Miniconf (LCA2005 Canberra, LCA2006 Dunedin — organized alongside the OpenEmbedded community), created and ran the Gaming Miniconf (LCA2007-2008, recording and publishing the session videos personally, four years before TimVideos), and organized the sold-out FPGA Miniconf at LCA2018 — a full-day workshop that put a Digilent Arty FPGA board in every attendee's hands.

Thousand Parsec · 2002 - 2010

Co-founder

A framework for building turn-based 4X space-empire strategy games; led it as a Google Summer of Code mentoring organization in 2007-2008 with twelve funded students.

OpenZaurus / OpenEmbedded / BitBake · 2002 - 2008

Core contributor

Early community embedded-Linux distribution for Sharp Zaurus PDAs and the OpenEmbedded/BitBake build ecosystem that grew out of it (which today powers the Yocto Project).
